The Afinibot Prusa i3 3D printer kit is ideal for those interested in getting started in 3D printing. We tested the Prusa i3 in the Micro-Mark mini-shop. Kits can sometimes be a pain to assemble. The directions on the SD card were not good English but had images and was easy to follow. The instructions say it is supposed to take 3.5 hours to assemble but it took us about 5 hours in reality. The thing we like about assembling the kit is that we learn the ins and outs of the product.
The 5 hours it took us to assemble does not include the calibration time. Also, the instructions did not disclose to remove the parafilm from the laminate plate prior to assembly. We had to take everything apart to remove.
The instruction for calibration were easy but we were unsuccessful in calibrating at first. We realized that some of the pre-assembled components were faulty. Upon disassembling two of the assembled components we realized a screw was missing from one and a screw on another component was too tight. Once fixed the calibration was easy.
We downloaded files from the Internet and they were easy to load into the host-operational software that comes with the machine. The bed takes a little time to heat. We liked the LCD screen interface and we were pleased with the resolution.
Like any 3D print we had to finish with filing, sanding, and painting. We are pleased with the results and believe this printer is great for the beginner. Anyone who likes taking things apart to see how they work will like the Prusa i3.
